NESCO
Artist for Peace Marisa
Berenson, and Harper's
Bazaar hosted a swell party at Donna
Karan's flagship Madison Avenue store for a special preview of
Karan's 2004 handbag collection to benefit UNESCO Berry Berenson-Perkins
Fund for Education of Children in Need.
The fund was created by
UNESCO director general
Koichiro Matsuura in honor of Berenson-Perkins who died on
American Airlines Flight #11 on
September 11, 2001
. Sister of actress
Marisa Berenson, Berry Berenson-Perkins, married to actor Tony
Perkins, was an internationally acclaimed photographer and
artist.
Several hundred of the
sisters' close friends swarmed Karan's multi-tiered emporium and the
adjoining Zen garden. General manager Dean
Taylor joined Harper's Bazaar merchandise director Bill
Kapfer and Marisa Berenson to greet the guests.
A smiling Liza
Minnelli arrived amidst a burst of flashbulbs. She couldn't wait
to throw her arms around her former Cabaret
co-star. "She's
my best friend. We take
dance together every morning at Luigi's Studio," gushed the
lovely Liza.
Clearly the dance classes
are doing the trick. Liza
looks svelte and fit as a fiddle and Marisa as glamorous as ever.
Bill Kapfer
obviously worked his Rolodex, bringing in the top folks in fashion
and the well-healed
Upper East Side
crowd.
Spotted in the crowd were Glenda Bailey, Debbie Bancroft, Johnathan Capehart, Amanda Ross, New
York Social Diary's David
Patrick
Columbia
and Jeff Hirsch, Nancy
Collins, Carolyn Angel, Shail Upadhya and Jean-Claude
Mastroianni.
We couldn't help notice two
extraordinary fashion icons with an age span of some five decades
– young dandy Patrick MacDonald and the octogenarian Zelda Cohen in one of her self-designed architectural constructions.
Zelda’s hat that matched
her suit had an almost Pharaoh-like look.
She stayed long enough to buzz around the room greeting old
friends and take a moment in the Zen garden for some quiet
reflection. Then it was
off to the second of her five parties of the evening!
It was a night for many
happy reunions with Nightlife
ETC running into old friends Arlene
and Allan Lasare (he's the creator of Plax and a dozen other health care
products that have made the Lasare's bank account very healthy
indeed).
Also ran into our old pal Susan Tisch and her husband, entertainment mogul Jeff,
who heads up Universal Attractions.
Susan was thrilled that her daughter Lacie
was working at Harper's.
We were thrilled too, as Lacie made sure we went home with
flacons of Donna Karan's new fragrance Cashmere Midst.
The ladies and the gents
continued shopping well after the caterers had packed up, much to
Berenson’s delight.
In a letter to her friends
she said, "UNESCO's mission is to work in favor of dialogue,
promote understanding between peoples and to fight against
exclusion. What better
way to honor
Berry
, who, along with so many others, perished due to lack of dialogue,
lack of understanding and exclusion?”
